How do I wash it?
Okay, you’ve bought the t-shirt; you’ve worn it on the big night out, got beer and lord knows what all over it in the process; now what? You want to wear it to the gym but not sure how to wash it without ruining the print? Have no fear. Here are some quick tips for washing and IRONING your printed garments.
If the item has been printed using Vinyl (the should have a one colour smooth feel to the touch, it is generally produced on lower quantities, wording or very simple designs, for stag and hen nights etc), you can simply wash the item (obviously taking into consideration the garment care guidelines printed on the label inside) up to 40 degrees on a normal wash. If you really want to be careful, turn it inside out, it won’t hurt. For ironing, the general rule on most things is to iron them inside out. This print will usually last as long as your garment does (within reason).
If the clothing has been screen printed (the design can be many colours and complex, the feel of it usually has a bumpy texture because of the use of inks fused directly with the surface of the garment), wash at 40 degrees with the garment inside out. DO NOT iron onto the actual design, always iron inside out. The design will last as long as the garment does as long as you follow this process.
If the top has a picture or photograph on it that has been printed using a transfer you will have already been warned that these don’t always last forever. They are great for one nighters and promotional purposes but not for longevity. With care however you may be able to keep the item for a long time and wear again and again. Wash as if delicate on a low temperature. Always iron inside out. You may find that on white tops the transfer may become brighter and new looking again when it has been ironed, the heat from the iron can actually rejuvenate the image (although this isn’t guaranteed).
For those items with embroidery, the usual rules apply as with any garment you most likely have in your wardrobe, wash at your usual 40 degrees, but please ensure to read the garment label first. Iron inside out or if not just don’t iron over the embroidery itself.
Simple as that really. Look after your clothes and they can be with you in a good condition for a long time to come.
